In de zeventiger en tachtiger jaren namen we vele z/w 35 mm negatieven waar we later video’s van maakten. In de betreffende landen was fotografie toentertijd allesbehalve gemeengoed.
Mogelijk zitten er portretten tussen van opa’s en oma’s waar de familie geen beeld van bezit. Of van de eigen vervlogen jeugdjaren. Of van hun buurt die sinds de laatste aardbeving niet meer bestaat.
When travelling in the seventies and eighties we took a lot of b/w 35 mm negatives which we later made into videos. At the time, photography was anything but commonplace in these countries. Possibly, the images may include portraits of grandparents of
which the family has no photo. Or of their own bygone youths. Or of the neighbourhood that doesn’t exist anymore since the latest earthquake.
In de negentiger jaren overwogen we z/w fotoboeken te laten drukken en in de betreffende locaties uit te delen – in de hoop zo eventuele nabestaanden te bereiken. Maar het bleek te kostbaar en ingewikkeld om aldaar te drukken of te importeren.
In the 1990s we did consider having a b/w photo book printed and distributed in the relevant locations - hoping to reach the next of kin in question. But it turned out to be too expensive and complicated to print or import over there.
Dankzij de smartphone hóeft het ook niet meer. Nu we het hoogwaardigste Vimeo-abonnement voor een jaar namen, kan men aldaar de bewuste fotovideo’s zien en verwante schermfoto’s downloaden. Het betreft met name de eerste vijf in de collectie: Nepal (’73-80) en de Molukken (’84).

As we have enlisted to the highest quality Vimeo subscription for a year, anyone can see the relevant photo videos anywhere and download related screenshots. This particularly applies to the first five items: Nepal (’73-’80) and the Moluccas (’84).
En ja, nu we het abonnement eenmaal hebben, kunnen al die andere, toevallig opgenomen clips gratis meeliften.
And yes, now that we have a subscription, all those other accidentally recorded clips may as well hitchhike for free.
